Why Giraffe Conservation Foundation?
The Giraffe Conservation Foundation is a global leader in giraffe conservation, dedicated to protecting and understanding giraffes' natural habitats, addressing key threats, and promoting coexistence between giraffes and local communities. GCF is the only NGO in the world that concentrates solely on the conservation and management of giraffes in the wild throughout Africa. Today, GCF estimates the current Africa-wide giraffe population at approximately 117,000 individuals.
There has been relatively little research conducted on giraffe conservation in Africa. Currently, the IUCN Red List recognizes one giraffe species and nine subspecies. However, new research by GCF and partners reveals that there are in fact four species and five subspecies that exist. A further review of this updated information is in progress, which will hopefully be considered by IUCN in future conservation assessments, giving each giraffe its own taxonomical status and conservation mandate.
